Touchmods iPhone VoIP app prompts ’sell-out’ accusations

Posted on February 8th, 2008 in VOIP, hack, iPhone, iPod Touch, third-party software | 1 Comment »

Controversy over at Touchmods.net, our favourite iPod Touch VoIP hack site.  Marian and the team promised an “XXXL” software announcement at the end of January, stoking the fires of expectation, and this week announced that, following a donated iPhone from French ADSL provider Free.fr, they’ve coded an iPhone VoIP application locked to that ISP’s service.  Called Siphon, the app is included as a part of Free’s ADSL package, which of course means you have to live in France to be able to order it.  Unsurprisingly, many Touchmods readers are frustrated that a) this is an app for the iPhone, not the iPod Touch and b) the potential userbase is very small; Touchmods promise to release an open version, compatible with iPhones and the Touch and unchained from Free, but that will apparently be “time-limited”.

Wikipedia might get contrary press arguing that it’s content isn’t as accurate as, say, Encyclopedia Britannica, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a fantastic resource and a great way to lose an hour or two following link trails.  Now you can have such fun on your iPod Touch (or iPhone, for that matter) whether in the doctors’ surgery, on the train or in a cave, thanks to Patrick Collinson’s guide to installing the full English or German versions onto your PMP.

As beautiful as the iPod Touch is, a common criticism from avid collectors of music is that 16GB simply isn’t enough to store their entire collection.  Today Apple have offered a solution: 32GB of flash memory in the same, 8mm thick chassis, and yours for $499.

Apple will launch low-cost WiFi, MultiTouch iPods, says analyst

Posted on January 29th, 2008 in Apple, Multi-Touch, WiFi, iPod Touch | No Comments »

Encouraging investors to buy Apple shares, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster outlined his own vision of how the Cupertino company’s iPod might evolve, highlighting the double-whammy of WiFi and MultiTouch as key leverage in the market.  Munster believes Apple’s intent is to steer the iPod line toward “mobile computing and Internet-connected portable devices”, maintaining Apple’s 70-percent share of the PMP market particularly through replacement purchases, as well as reducing overall cost of the units and maintaining its all-important dollar share.

“In order to achieve [15-percent] year-over-year iPod growth, we are expecting Apple to introduce cheaper, innovative iPods with Wi-Fi and multi-touch technology” Gene Munster, analyst, Piper Jaffray

If you’ve already got an iPod Touch running firmware 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 that has been Jailbroken, rather than going to the effort of plugging it into your computer to run though the latest Jailbreak, why not use wunderkinds AriX and Ben’s iJailbreak Mobile, and do the whole thing directly from your iPod Touch.

Posted on January 28th, 2008 in VOIP, WiFi, hack, iPod Touch, iPod Touch Accessories, third-party software | 1 Comment »

Looks like the SIP-VoIP team over at touchmods.net have been busy.  Last we heard, v.1 of the software that allows the iPod Touch to be used as a VoIP phone via its WiFi connection had launched, and the guys were busy putting together microphone schematics and parts lists.  Now, there’s a pretty healthy list of 25 compatible SIP-based VoIP services - including the popular Gizmo Project and Asterisk - and they’ve just sold out of their first batch of 1200 microphone adaptors, priced at $45 a pop.

With a design leaf seemingly taken out of Bose’s book, only embracing the iPod Touch (and its siblings), iLuv’s i255 might have a daft name but it’s certainly not short of functionality.  Not only is there a dock compatible with the iPod Touch, iPod classic (80GB, 160GB), iPod Nano 3rd Gen and iPod with video (30GB, 60GB, 80GB), but a DVD player too.

Amy Winehouse death-bet site promises iPod Touch to best prediction

If someone is seemingly doing their utmost to prematurely reduce their lifespan, is it wrong to bet an iPod Touch on it?  That’s the question being asked by WhenWillAmyWhitehouseDie - or, more accurately, they’re asking you to ignore the moral question, suggest a date and, if you’re closest, you’ll win an iPod Touch for your prescient troubles.
