Fresh into the “you’ll know if you need it” category comes word that the Microsoft Office for Mac team have tweaked PowerPoint 2008 to export presentation slides as images straight into iPhoto. That means you can sync them directly onto your iPod Touch, and either host a small-scale demo or, using the Apple AV cables, hook the PMP up to a projector and avoid having to unsheathe your trusty laptop.

Research looking at shopping patterns this past weekend has indicated that while the iPod Touch may be responsible for drawing people in to look at the PMP, the iPod nano tends to figure more highly in sales considerations. Analyst firm ThinkEquity found that in Apple stores sales of the two devices were roughly equal, while in Best Buy the nano was the preferred model.
“Even though iPod Touch generated lots of interest among people … when it came to purchases, they considered Nano given its smaller size and lower price” Darren Aftahi, ThinkEquity

XtremeMac have already produced a number of rubbery, silicon cases for the iPod Touch, but if your PMP is more boardroom than teenager’s-bedroom then you may be interested in their latest range. Retro gaming can have a strange effect on some people. Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz has been whipped into a frenzy of excitement at the discovery that ScummVM, a multi-platform emulation engine that allows you to play various titles from LucasArts’ and Sierra’s back-catalogue, has been freshly fettled for Apple’s touchscreen range. Compatible with both the iPod Touch and the iPhone, the games - including classics such as Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island and Sam & Max - all play in full-screen and using a surprisingly straightforward tap and hold control setup.
“These are the only games that truly feel at home on the iPhone, thanks to its great touchscreen support, even better than Apple’s native software” Jesus Diaz, Gizmodo

Perhaps it doesn’t take much for you to fill up the 8 or 16GB capacity of your iPod Touch, but maybe you also have trouble finding new music to mix in there with old favourites. In a first for the company, O2 - who are exclusively selling the iPhone in the UK - are now stocking iPods alongside Apple’s cellphone. The iPod Touch is now available on the O2 website alongside its cellular sibling, although it’s not yet clear whether they’ll also be sold in-store. Prices are, unsurprisingly, on a par with that charged by Apple themselves - £199 for the 8GB, £269 for the 16GB.

For some, an in-car install is an FM transmitter and maybe an iPod cradle that clips onto a vent. In this Infiniti FX35, however, it consists of a very slick hack of the Apple AV cable, which feeds music and video directly through the factory-fit radio and onto the aftermarket pop-up screen on the dash-top and a flip-up DVD screen in the rear.

Check out the video of the setup in action, after the cut…

Having very few practical skills myself, I’m more than happy to choose from the multitude of aftermarket iPod Touch cases (such as can be found in our own Accessories Store), but if you’re handier with a Dremel then maybe you’d like to emulate Michael Dinsmore’s DIY wooden case. Constructed using scrap plywood and pine, the flip-top sheath has a spring-mounted false-bottom that cushions the iPod from knocks and jolts.

Apple’s catalogue of movies on iTunes gets a new addition this week, Purple Violets by director Edward Burns. What makes this two-hour film special, however, is that it’s being released to the online media store without first courting audiences in a cinema, or on DVD or TV. The exclusive premiere - available to download for $14.99 - stars Selma Blair and Debra Messing, and is the latest of Burns’ films to see initial release in non-mainstream format.

If you’ve been waiting for the right iPod-compatible speaker dock to come along, Cambridge Soundworks may have just the thing for you. Though to be fair, to call the i765 a “speaker dock” is to do it a disservice; with built-in DVD and CD player, FM/AM radio and subwoofer it’s actually squaring up to quite a bit of your existing hifi equipment.
