Fring: VOIP software released for iPod Touch
Posted on April 15th, 2008 in VOIP, jailbreak, third-party software |
If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch and you like to make calls for free over a Wi-Fi connection and need a fresh new look and some simplicity, try out Fring. It allows you to use skype to connect with any other Skype member and does so in an attractive manor.

However, it does not only do Skype, it also does MSN Messenger, ICQ, GTalk, SIP, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo! This is great for anyonr who would like a simple way to connect with friends over a wireless connection.
You can get the application for free by loading up the Installer on a jailbroken device with the company’s repo. Check out YouTube for a demonstration video.

How can the ipod touch make wifi calls if it does not have a microphone? This should work for the iphone but not the ipod touch.
Ummm…You buy one and plug it into the bottom of it…how else?
You always go off the deepend before investigating your claims. It does NOT work with the ipod Touch. NO ONE has made it work. With a hacked ivoice III mic and a jailbroke touch it just crashes when you try to use skype. Spend 5 minutes investigating before you throw up bogus info.
Yeh, says ipod touch/ iphone not supported. Looks like someone’s looking for easy views
LOOK mac rumors said the same thing….

So i guess you can use the MSN and such
it actually does work on an ipod. not completely though. i can receive chats, but don’t write. an for calls…i’ll just wait one or two days….
I tried to install it on my Touch but it keeps on failling…
Wont install.
It does not work with touch. I got it installed, I can text, make and receive calls via skype&sip. BUT cannot receive or transmit audio since the software wants to use an tnternal mike & speaker that don’t exist in the touch.
I got it for my iPod touch and the chat works, but after someone sends me a text it will only work if they call me after. It sends it, but I wont receive anything until after I get a call. trpicalguy you say that u can make and receive calls via Fring and Skype, but it wont work for me. How did u get yours to work? Also there is the iVoice which connects to the USB port on the bottom of the iPod touch that allows you to talk, with some minor adjustments.
Using my Ipod Touch, I can hear people at the other end, but they cannot hear me. I was using the iPhone ear buds with built-in mike. I tried using a different headset, but no luck.
– I’m using Fring v1.0.1.5 on my iPod Touch 2nd generation.
– Didn’t try Skype, but I got Fring working with SIP, although the outgoing calls terminate roughly 30 secs after the communication was established.
– Works fine with incoming calls, so I don’t think this is a configuration issue from my end.
– I’m waiting for the in-ear headset availability for the iPod Touch with the remote and mic, model MA850G/A, meantime I’m using the iPhone Stereo Headset, model MA814ZM/B on my iPod Touch, and everything else I tried works as planned so far.
– Still have to investigate on that 30 secs outgoing call limitation.
– Perhaps with a free SIP provider I won’t have that restriction, Time will tell.
I don’t know how old these messages are, so I apologize if I’m repeating what you already know. I subscribed to VoIPstunt. You buy some credit and you get some two dozen countries for free calls for 120 days. Then, SIP works fine with Fring on iPOD Touch - it doesn’t cut off. Skype is a problem sometimes but other chat sites aren’t… Then, today it stopped connecting to Fring on WiFi for no reason. I’m looking into it now.
If I use a Sennheiser MM50 iP Stereo Headset for example that supports ipod touch models and that has a microphone, can make use of the skype feature from Fring? Will I be able to transmit audio?
It does work with the iPod touch. You only need a iPod touch 2G, fring application, sip account, and a mic. You have to buy the mic. and put it on the bottom of your iPod touch
I use the headphone/mic combo from my blackberry. Works fine on the ipod touch 2G
Yes, it does work for ipod touch 2.2 firmware. It doesn’t have to be jailbroken, but it does need to have a headset plugged in. I called my home phone with it quite a few times, and then I broke it, so it doesn’t make calls anymore. Oops.

Hi everyone,
I have a 1Gen ipod Touch, and information from the web indicates that with firmware 2.2 now allows the 1G to accept an external mic but only via the docking port at the bottom of the Touch.
There has to be millions of 1Gen ipod Touch owners at this time.
Has anyone had success with this using Fring for instance?
Thanks,
I have a voipstunt account but when I dial a number it just doesn’t work
Hhhhhheeeeeellllllllpppppppp

Hey, just wanted to update you guys real quick. I have an iPod Touch 1G running firmware 2.2 and I am using the iVoice III mic and my Skype account and it works great! I bought the “Unlimited” calling plan for US and Canada (about $3 US a month) and I am using that.
Please support indie iTunes artists!
Fring works 100% fine on the 2G iPod touch all you need is a wifi signal but you have to create an account from your desktop and than pit the username and password in and hit login.
I just got fringe for my iPod touch 2G and it works perfectly fine. I am just awaiting my mic that I ordered over the Internet. But yea it works fine on skype, I still didn’t try Voipstunt.
i have an ipod toch 2g with fring and works well, i can makes calls to landlines for free, the only downside that i need to overcome is i have a external mic that i got off ebay and it works as a mic but ipod also pics it up as headphones so i cant hear the other side, anyone help me overcome this?
I have the iPod 2G and installed Fring, I use the headphones/mic from my Blackberry (which sounds great recording audio using iTalk) but the sound through Fring is really awful - in both directions. However, its the only iPod solution that currently is available in Canada. Fring also froze up after a bit of use. If Skype’s iPhone/iPod app actually comes out in Canada, will have to try it.
Anyone help. I have been told by the apple shop my touch is the older model which wont accept a mic thru the jack socket. Apparently there is a mic available which works thru the docking port or a blackberry kit. Skype works fine for me as an I.M. platform. Any help/answers much appreciated.
It does work Richard, have been using it on my ipod touch for some time now.
I got it and set it up and it works great oh and you can get a phone number for it on YouTube there is a video to do that and I do have there (apples) headphones with remote and mic the remote is great like if you have your ipod in your pocket
Fring worked for a few weeks. Now my calls don’t go through. I hear them ringing but that’s it, then it cuts off.
how do u jailbreak ur ipod 2nd gen. and can someone tell me how to use fring. i dial the numbers but the sip or skype doesnt light up for me to make calls
My issue is similar as jim, Fring worked for a few call and now my calls don’t go through. I hear ringing then terminates after 30 seconds, please help!!!!!!!!!
my email is djtek19@yahoo.com
I don’t usually post on blogs but had to on yours. You have a very distinctive writing style. A lot of people don’t have that touch, they just drone on and on in the most boring way. But not you - thanks! Thanks again!
It does work with the 3rd Generation iPod Touch.
