How well would Android UI suit iPod Touch?
Posted on November 13th, 2007 in Android, hack, iPhone, iPod Touch |
Before you get excited: this isn’t exactly what it looks like. Rather than being the amazing hack of getting Google’s open-source cellphone platform Android running on an iPod Touch, it’s actually a slideshow to give an impression of how the OS might look on a multi-touch device. Touch owner cast42 sliced out some screenshots of Android and sync’d them to his PMP; no, it may not make calls or, well, do anything, but it gives a fair idea of how the platform could look on a device of a similar form-factor to the iPhone.

Comparing Apple UI to Android, it has to be said that Cupertino’s efforts look slicker; Android, at least in these preliminary images, is a little too Sidekick for my liking. Still, who’d care to place money on the idea that hackers will be doing their utmost to get Google’s software running on Apple hardware asap?

So, if you have questions, something to share, code you need looked over or tested for the Android platform, or just want to be a part of a community that’s bound to grow quite rapidly, feel free to check out AndroidCommunity.com.

i like these phones they so cute and hot i kown thet cost to much
The iPod Touch is becoming a pain in the ass with its restrictions and all the iTunes crap. I love my Android phone, and I’d blow away the iPod Touch software for Android in a heartbeat.
That
dumb
android software is just cocoa touch from apple(the iphone and ipod touch software) played around with. its literally almost 100% identical. they just changed the way it looks
the android software is good, dont get me wrong. i love the htc android, and have recommended it to people, even though i have an iphone
but in my opinion, apple’s software is just a little better. just an opinion though.
Well, it looks good it really does. Altough in my opinion android gui’s still doesn’t fullfil hci’s guidelines and have too much flashy designs and functions that takes a couple of minutes to figure out and don’t satisfy me better than apple’s a bit more simple solutions with a cleaner and sharper design. Could be that i’m more used to iphone but i don’t think that’s the settling factor of my opinion.

Tucker: My first impression of you is that you are an Apple fanboy. Like most fanboys, you won’t let little things like facts get in the way of your fanboy rant.
Android actually allows users to multitask and have multiple applications running simultaneously. It also has the distinction of being open. I can download the android SDK for free. To publish an app to the android market costs $25 (instead of $99 for the Apple App Store), and anyone can install apps for free that aren’t on the Android Market. The Android Market also doesn’t have a certification process that randomly denies applications. I don’t have to “jailbreak” my device just to get non-approved apps installed. I also don’t have to pay for my updates. Apple takes choices away. Android gives choices back. I’m selling my iTouch because I have an Eris now. I don’t want to own a device whose makers intentionally prevent me from using it the way I want.
I am a linux addict and yet I think that in the end, despite (or maybe because of) the iPhone’s limitations, it will win the market and is my phone of choice. Like TNTC said, a fanboy will always be a fanboy. But besides that there are other things to consider. I also like to screw around with a phone, and generally be free to do whatever I want with it. At first, seeing the limitations of iPhone like jail, no fs contact whatsoeve, i thought they consider me a dump twit to say the least. However 90% of people voted for Hitler and the same 90% use Windows. The majority don’t care about their rights. Freedom and choice are not for them.
But besides that iPhone is excellent because it’s restrictions guarantee that it will always behave as expected. It won’t lag a game because you haven’t closed the browser etc. Apple have really done a good job and the end result is excellent. This is what linux lacks and someone should really start such an open source project, that is to take away all the soooo many options for linux and deliver a clean, unified, 1 solution for 1 operation distro. For me any distro will do. After 2 days of tunning i can call it my own. I know it’s internals. But a phone is just a phone. I don’t even care about it’s camera because it will never be as good as a real one. When it gets as good as the cheapest photo camera, I might consider buying one. The mp3/games thing is ok but that’s that.
The linux approach to phones would be to include all sorts of gizmos such as a swiss army knife(hardware) with it, and the button to release the blade would be next to the volume button(if you think this is an exaggeration consider kernel httpd). Talk about multimedia! I guess there would be only one small step towards Google Self Surgery from there since the hardware would already support it. Just imagine! You could remove your own appendix while waiting for the bus.

Android, pls dun fret,y cant u leave ur workplace n be with me?hope to see you, really!
Tntc is absolutely right who would get an apple product mixed with a Linux product which has better software and gives the user more freedom.one thing I hate about the iPhone is it’s lack of customizable abilty.sure u can add hundreds of little shortcut icons and move them around in set locations, but having widgets and able to have the freedom to move them anywhere u like is loads better. I have the eris and it is so much better!the browser is better, the customizable ability is better, the application market is better, and the entire design is better. One thing I must say the only that I view as better on the iPhone is the accelorameter sensitivity and that’s about it. I didn’t even mention the camera it’s way better 5 mp is better than 3. Apple is gonna have to put out just an amazing phone if they wanna keep up with the new android tech and honestly I don’t think a giant iPod touch will help.
like this…. phones

Awesome blog. Thanks so much for providing all the Android phone users out there a great place to find information about their phones and the great Android apps that are available. I’m pretty pumped to see how the Android Market is going to evolve as I think this is close to the relative time in the lifecycle of iPhone apps and the App Store when refinement of ideas and technology started to really take off!
Certainly an exciting time to be an Android phone user. Thanks again!
