IM+ brings Skype to iPod Touch
Posted on October 22nd, 2007 in VOIP, iPod Touch, third-party software |
Clever as the iPhone/iPod Touch hackers are, they can’t exactly code up a cellular radio for the Touch and slap it on via a quick Jailbreak; if you want to make calls on your PMP, you’ll need to shell out for the more expensive iPhone option and, probably, shackle yourself to AT&T. However, if you’re content to make calls near your iPod Touch, then IM+ for Skype have just the answer with their software.

It’s all very clever: basically, you log in to their service, add your Skype details, and then whenever you want to make a call you slap in the number of a nearby landline phone and IM+ for Skype initiates a Skype Out call from your account to both the person you want to speak to and the phone near to you.
Okay, so it’s not free - and even if Skype or, more likely, an interested third-party took the time to code up a version of the VOIP software for the iPod Touch, it lacks the necessary microphone and internal speaker - but it could potentially be cheap and certainly cheaper than paying AT&T for the privilege of having an iPhone.
You can access the service by pointing your iPod Touch’s browser to http://s4iphone.com/ They offer a 10-day trial and then either monthly subscription of $4.95 or a lifetime one-off charge of $25.
