The world is soon to be revolutionized by an all-new type of media player/ultra compact personal computer also known as the iPod Touch. This new device not only has up to 16GB of flash storage, but WiFi and the ability to do just about anything from within its web browser. As such the number of iPod Touch accessories will probably run rampant.

Apple is far less stingy about who makes accessories for their devices than most companies, which has led to some seriously weird accessories for previous iterations of the iPod. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as most of those accessories did serve some sort of function. With the iPod Touch, the stylish device that it is, you can be sure that there will be tons of cases made, likely starting at the lower end with uber-generic cases that look like crap but cover the iPod Touch’s screen, then going up to more fashionable, and functional cases from the likes of Belkin. I suspect the iPod Touch will even be blessed with cases from such high end, quality product manufacturers as Prada, Fendi, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.

Some cases for the iPod Touch will probably add some functionality either to themselves or to the iPod Touch, such functionality could be a WiFi range extender of some sort, a backup battery, and FM transmitter, or maybe something as simple as a source of shade to prevent glare. One thing is for sure, a device that is so fashionable, and so expensive, will certainly need two things protected, first its body from falls, heat, etc. and then its glass touchscreen from just about anything that could harm it.

On top of cases, the iPod Touch will of course see its own entire line of accessories. Its larger than the iPod Classic or the new iPod Nano, but its thinner than the iPhone which means a totally new form factor to make accessories for. There will first be tons of connectivity options, people will want to connect the iPod Touch to everything they can, their computers, their vehicles, even their home theaters. So that means lots of docks and FM transmitter type of accessories. Certainly some of the docks will combine functionality giving the iPod Touch a wireless remote when docked, or allowing it to connect with your home theater and your PC at the same time. Maybe they will even allow you to search new iTunes WiFi store from your TV so you can purchase new movies and TV shows and watch them right from the comfort of your own home. How great would it be to have an iPod Touch dock that allowed you to surf the web via your iPod Touch, but on your TV and using a full sized keyboard and mouse? There is so much functionality built into the iPod Touch that its uses can only grow with the addition of accessories. iLuv has already released an FM transmitter accessory that not only works with the iPod Touch, but was even themed after it with it’ brushed aluminum surface and glossy black accents.

The market for iPod Touch accessories is opening up, companies have already designed and are starting to produce several items for the iPod Touch so you can only expect the flood gates to open as soon as the iPod Touch is actually released.
