After many errors, crashes and little word from Apple, the iPod Touch Firmware 2.0 was released late Friday night. The iPhone’s 2.0 firmware was leaked early and a few people got their hands on it. After some problems which included crashes and overall OS instability the version was said to be only for 3G iPhones and the link to is was pulled from many tech sites.

After hours of waiting many Touch users became impatient waiting for Apple’s link to actually come up with the purchase page. But around 10 PM pacific time all the bugs were out and the software available for purchase.
The App store was flooded with users and many of the great Apps ranged from 2-50 dollars with the average price at around $7 dollars an App. However, there were also many free apps that can be downloaded and are extremely useful. What do you think> what great Apps have you found when you were scouting the App Store, let us know in the comments.

I bought/downloaded a bunch of apps over the weekend. Here are the highlights:
FREE
* Twitterrific: I downloaded the free version, and I recommend that most Twitter users do the same. I just got my first ad last night and it wasn’t intrusive at all. The interface is very slick, though perhaps not as nice as the web app, Hahlo.
* Facebook/MySpace: If you use either of these social networks, there’s no reason not to download these free apps.
* Remote: I was very impressed by Apple’s offering. It works great, though I did have a few moments where iTunes didn’t react to changes in volume or playlist.
PAID
* Tile Sudoku ($5): Imagine Sudoku played with Scrabble tiles (using numbers instead of letters, obviously). The interface is very intuitive, though I noticed that the app doesn’t always realize that you’ve finished the puzzle.
* Things ($10): A very well-conceived To-Do List app. Doesn’t sync with the Mac program (which doesn’t matter to me) and no recurring events option, but the developers promise free updates in the coming months.
DO NOT GET:
* Steps ($2): I bought this thinking that a pedometer would make a great iPhone app. Problem is, it doesn’t really work. The app only recognizes about half of the steps you take and you can’t lock the device are else the app shuts down. I’m hoping for fixes in the future, but I won’t hold my breath.
* Aurora Feint (Free): The game is great, reminiscent of Pokemon Puzzle League, but the volume is obnoxious and there’s no way to turn it down. I want to play more but my ears can’t take the abuse.
Thanks for the info Jeff. I would like to also offer a few other apps I think are worth getting:
- WeatherBug : A really useful weather app that offers more than a nice graphic like the original. Radar, forecast description and pictures. Supprots multiple sites
- NYT app : Basically get the daily NYT paper for free! Caches the stories so you can read on train or w/o an internet connection
- Bloomberg : a real stock app that makes the original one looks really lame. Stories, favorite stocks and more!
Don’t forget to get a nice hardcover case for your iPod to protect it. There’s a lot of different ones available at http://mjdinsmore.etsy.com. Classy, unique wood cases are a real conversation starter!
Jeff - thanks so much for recommending the “Remote” application. That is just the coolest thing.
After updating my iPod Touch 32 Go with the 2.0 version, I experience a very slow and tedious process when I type any message, code, character, … with the keyboard on the touchscreen.
Is it a general problem or something specific to my device ?
