The Future of handheld devices
Posted on March 14th, 2008 in Apple, MacBook Touch, Multi-Touch, WiFi, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPod Touch rival |
The iPhone and iPod Touch have been very stiff competition for all other mobile developers. It seems over the last few months every mobile phone or music device has been compared the iPhone and iPod Touch because of their massive features and abilities.

This brings up the question of what handheld devices are going to be like in the future. With Apple said to be already developing a larger Multi-Touch device for mobile web surfing and various tasks many other companies are trying to do the same. When the June apps store premiers it will open the device to all things imaginable.
Even Apple themselves consider the iPod Touch a mobile Wi-Fi platform which sperates it from all of the rest of the iPod line. Apple will have more and more competition along the way with developers coming out with more and more mobile Wi-Fi platforms to compete with the two players. Only time will tell.

Sarah, I’m with you. I thought the author of this article would have some predictions…
Here’s my prediction. The cell phone as we know it is dead. Why pay to have a cell phone number if you can get on the internet and make a free voip call? Seriously. Apple cannot lawfully restrict what apps you want to run on your iphone. That’s like buying a tv and told you can only watch certain channels. Apple will either get sued or Google or an outsider is going to swoop in and take the market. Your smart phone will be a data only media center. It will connect to your tv at home and with special glasses when you leave home. You’ll get all your broadcast media on it. No more Cable/satellite bill. No more blockbuster. It would also be your PC’/gaming console broadband connection. I envision virtual keyboards or gloves that allow you to type on any surface. When that happens the laptop will be an obsolete device.
