Touch Hack: Add Calendar Events to your iPod Touch

Posted on October 11th, 2007 in hack, iPod Touch, jailbreak | 3 Comments »

Apple Calendar appSome say it’s a purposeful feature-cripple, others are giving Apple the benefit of the doubt and suggesting they disabled it because of a bug that couldn’t be quashed before release; either way, the inability to add events to the calendar app has many iPod Touch owners frustrated and/or fuming.  Thanks to the recent Jailbreak, though, and the enterprising work of hackers Nicholas Penree and Tony Hoyle, there’s now a relatively straightforward way to enable that same functionality that iPhone users take for granted.

iPod touch hacked and Jailbroken

Posted on October 10th, 2007 in hack, iPod Touch, jailbreak, third-party software | 7 Comments »

I was always told that money talks, and bullshit runs marathons, so its no surprise that when Vincent put up 10,000 credits for the forums-based points system that translates into money at the Apple-Touch store, there were people willing to risk bricking their iPod Touches just to jailbreak them. We are still expecting some more proof and hopefully a step by step guide of how they did it, but there are more than the standard Springboard apps on their Springboard, and the screens from both gentleman’s iPod Touches say iPod in the upper corner and lack the cellular icons.

Furthermore, we have video of one of the hacks. The forum member named Phoen!x was the first to complete the hack and post proof, followed shortly, as in 4 minutes later, by kewltechdude. Congratulations to both gentleman on hacking their iPod Touches.

iPod Touch v1.1.1 Jailbreak solution found

iPhone 1.1.1 jailbreak

Well, you can take my “slow and steady” adage and chuck it in the trash - already hackers have found a jailbreak solution for the v.1.1.1 iPod Touch (and the iPhone). Although there’s no software release to be downloaded yet, applications shown to be running include the popular NES emulator as well as the Colloquy IRC chat client. EDIT: the hack team have made the Jailbreak software available and are asking for bug reports; be warned, though, they’re saying it’ll prevent your iPod Touch from syncing with iTunes. If you decide to try it anyway, let us know how you get on in the comments!

Apple have apparently changed the way the “SpringBoard” app launcher handles icons, and so there’s a limit of 15 spaces, but this is still better than having to resort to a command line to run third-party software. The hacker team also found international support inside SpringBoard, which will hopefully allow multi-language programmes for those who have a primary language other than English.

iPod Touch hacking triggers Apple’s ire

iPod Touch hacking

iPod Touch hacking is set to become a far more clandestine affair, as Apple sets aside its “we’re having a fun old cat & mouse chase!” stance on unlocking and plays hard-ball with would-be tweakers. The Cupertino kill-joys called in some ISP heavies (or as close to heavies as geeks can get) to zap the webspace holding some uploaded iPod Touch code ferreted out by a fan-modder called Martyn.

Unlike the iPhone, which the aftermarket hack community has pretty much been left with to fondle (at least until Apple’s half-apologetic disclosure that an upcoming firmware upgrade will likely brick your modified cellphone), it seems Apple are much more protective about the Touch; it’s been theorised that this is connected to speculation that its in part a trial for a new, tougher to crack firmware model that may even jump over to future iPhone updates.

iPod Touch Jailbreak evades hackers

Despite being described (and in some cases dismissed) as “an iPhone without the phone”, the iPod Touch is proving to be its own little challenge when it comes to jailbreaking the PMP.  Jailbreak, as any iPhone tweaker is likely to know, is a fan-made piece of software which opens up the iPhone to third-party software and all manner of hacks (such as custom ringtones and the like); it was expected that the iPod Touch jailbreak would come soon after launch, possibly even using the same software, but it hasn’t been so straightforward.

Apple iPod Touch jailbreak evades happy hackers

It turns out that hacks for the iPod Touch will have to take a back seat while coders figure out the differences; so far it’s looking like Apple’s engineers have been a little more cunning in trying to prevent their PMP from being hacked, with things like the onboard asr file encryption code being zero’d out (unlike with the first-gen iPhone) and seemingly an altered “language” for Touch-iTunes communication.
