I recently snagged an iPod Touch and found myself in the search of a shiny new case. I have long envied the line of Paul Frank cases so I knew roughly what I wanted. Luckily, the Apple Store had plenty in supply and let me take them all out of the boxes to decide which one I preferred.

So I got this case kind of late last night, so I chose to play with it for a while before reviewing it. You’re probably wondering how you “play” with an iPod Case, well I had my methods, but they claim its “waterproof, dustproof, dirtproof, sandproof, and drop-proof” and I can personally assure to that all of those are true, that’s how you play with an iPod case. When I got it, I looked it over, figured out how to put my iPod in, and then closed it up, from there, every time I would have normally placed my iPod somewhere; I threw it there, which was so much fun. Then I took it in the bath with me and threw some (a lot) water on it, none got inside, but I didn’t feel like submerging it because I though that might be pushing it, and they may have sent me the case to try out, but I had to supply my own iPod which I don’t feel like ruining.

They have a rubber, sealed button that works with the “home” button, or the little round button at the bottom of the screen, it works flawlessly. The touchscreen is covered by a rugged transparent material that has survived my beating, and I can still use the touchscreen through this material, in fact, I’d go so far as to say my typing has improved, likely due to the lack of slipping fingers onto other keys.

Recently Tim Gideon Of PC Magazine rated the iPod Touch “The clear frontrunner in the flash player division”. After many companies have now started to stray away from the hard drive based player to a flash based memory player. He feels the Touch makes the best of this situation His made his decision after getting to use many of the leading flash players.

The main reason he gave it this title was the elegance of the device. He stated it was beautiful with the glass front to all of the features of the device itself. He also likes how it offers the top storage of any flash player currently in the market with 16 GB, and how apple takes all of this info and puts it into the design of their devices.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt in my time writing about tech, it’s that while a good review might endear you, a controversial review is what really pulls in the page views. And it’s a tactic that has obviously worked for Business Week’s Cliff Edwards, whose coverage of the iPod Touch certainly errs on the overly critical. Edwards has a number of disappointments with the touchscreen PMP, seemingly focused on a poor set-up experience:
“As with the iPhone, when you first turn on the Touch, you need to connect it to an active iTunes account. This syncs it with information such as how much money you have available for wireless music downloads. I found this requirement a little annoying, since you can’t use the device until you do it” Cliff Edwards, Business Week

Beautiful, bearded Maestro of Tech, Walt Mossberg, has been gently fingering the iPod Touch and finally told us exactly what he thinks of the iPhone-lookalike in his Wall Street Journal review. Now Walt’s review of the iconic Apple cellphone was likely instrumental in pushing the handset to the top of the most-coveted leader-board, and Cupertino must’ve been hoping that it’d be another near-landslide victory for their flagship PMP. Things, of course, are never so simple as that, and while parts of the Touch were good enough to make Walt’s beard stand on end, other things - namely battery life - were in for some criticism.
“[Apple] claims that the Touch can play music for up to 22 hours and video for up to five hours on a single battery charge, even with Wi-Fi turned on. But in my tests, using factory settings, music playback lasted just under 17 hours and video playback lasted just over four hours. Nearly every other iPod I’ve tested, including the new Nano, handily beat Apple’s battery claims” Walt Mossberg, WSJ.com
Check out Walt’s video review after the cut, together with more tidbits of his opinion…
