UK bank Nationwide have announced today that they’ve formatted their internet banking site so as to be directly compatible with the Safari browser on the iPod Touch and iPhone. Apparently that gives the organisation the heady title of “UK financial services organisation open to the widest range of browser formats”, likely to be good news to the 37-percent of UK adults who regularly use an online banking service.

If you’ve got a big enough music collection to fill your iPod Touch and still have plenty of tracks left over then predicting what songs you’ll want to hear can be a chore. The alternative is to ditch the Touch and pick up an iPod classic (blasphemy!), dramatically narrow down your musical tastes or look at some sort of audio streaming software. So far there are two sorts: the first, such as SeeqPod, is a sort of online music search engine; the second, requiring a little more preparation but potentially preferable results, is to stream music from your home computer straight to your PMP. That’s what’s on offer with the alpha release of Simplify Media for iPod Touch and iPhone.

Fresh into the “you’ll know if you need it” category comes word that the Microsoft Office for Mac team have tweaked PowerPoint 2008 to export presentation slides as images straight into iPhoto. That means you can sync them directly onto your iPod Touch, and either host a small-scale demo or, using the Apple AV cables, hook the PMP up to a projector and avoid having to unsheathe your trusty laptop.

Retro gaming can have a strange effect on some people. Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz has been whipped into a frenzy of excitement at the discovery that ScummVM, a multi-platform emulation engine that allows you to play various titles from LucasArts’ and Sierra’s back-catalogue, has been freshly fettled for Apple’s touchscreen range. Compatible with both the iPod Touch and the iPhone, the games - including classics such as Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island and Sam & Max - all play in full-screen and using a surprisingly straightforward tap and hold control setup.
“These are the only games that truly feel at home on the iPhone, thanks to its great touchscreen support, even better than Apple’s native software” Jesus Diaz, Gizmodo

If this doesn’t show just how popular the iPod touch jailbreak is, I don’t know what will. Seen in the picture is an iPod touch with iSkin’s model “touch”, and most importantly; installer.app, ApolloIM, and what appears to be finder.

Jailbreaking is catching on amongst users, while I personally think the iPod touch and iPhone are both ridiculously boring without 3rd party apps and definitely have more of a potential selling. The multitouch screen is revolutionary and with games such as “Hockey” from iApp-a-Day, the iPhone and iPod touch’s potential is clearly shown.

With the ongoing cat & mouse Jailbreak challenge, it’s easy to forget that there are some great applications for the iPod Touch that don’t actually require you to hack your PMP - instead, they rely on clever use of mobile Safari’s functionality. One such app is Tap&Go, a heavily modified version of Google Maps which allows you to customise the topography with markers, pan and tilt the view, add comments and then share the personalised page with friends and family via email.

While the iPod Touch/iPhone Dev Team are kept busy working on Jailbreaking and unlocking whichever firmware version Apple are choosing to release, that leaves other hack-happy individuals thinking of all the useful things they can do with their newly-liberated devices. Over at Hack In The Box they’re looking at the iPod Touch’s potential as a network management tool; well, actually they’re setting the PMP up as the perfect, discrete hacking platform, but we’ll err on the side of legal caution and consider the whole thing a legitimate WiFi analysis device.

Just how difficult is it to code new applications for the iPod Touch and iPhone? Sean Heber seems determined to prove that the answer is “not very tricky at all”, as he’s set himself the target of producing a new app every day of November.
“In the coming month, I hope to deliver a variety of different apps that try to use several of the the fundamental features that the iPhone platform has to offer - along with some that are just plain silly or fun. Some will no-doubt be duds - but I’m hoping that out of 31 apps (counting Pumpkin), that perhaps one or two will strike a chord with you in some way and bring a little joy or spark of inspiration into your life” Sean Heber iApp-a-Day
