GBA emulator for iPod Touch

Posted on November 12th, 2007 in hack, iPhone, iPod Touch, third-party software | No Comments »

Emulation gaming has taken off massively, with more and more people relegating the graphics-laden titles of today in favour of the insanely addictive gameplay of retro classics.  One of the more popular platforms seems to be Nintendo, and as of today the excellent gpSP emulator - which allows you to play GameBoy Advance games on other hardware - has been ported to the iPod Touch and iPhone.  gpSPhone, as the software is called, is in its early days when it comes to compatibility, but it’s yet another example of the avid homebrew community taking on the advanced Apple hardware.

Seeqpod On iPod touch and iPhone

Posted on November 9th, 2007 in Apple, firmware, hack, jailbreak, third-party software | 1 Comment »

Seeqpod is by far the coolest and most useful web application usable by Safari on both the iPod touch and iPhone. Seeqpod is an application that lists music by popular searches from open web servers it finds. Not sure about the legality of this, but it’s definitely a great web application.

Seeqpod

The application lets you search for artists or tracks of your choice, or will let you chose from popular artists and playlists. The popular artists section gives a nice current list of artists, most of them you will know who they are.

iEmule iPod Touch interface for eMule download client

Posted on November 8th, 2007 in iPhone, iPod Touch, third-party software | No Comments »

Apple may intend for the iPod Touch to be a mere PMP, but everyone else has other ideas.  We’ve already looked at remote control software for your Mac, but how about if you’re wanting to queue up new downloads for eMule?  That’s the challenge Spanish developer aNieto set himself, quickly coding up an iPod Touch and iPhone-friendly web server interface [translated] for the p2p client.

Remember The Milk offers up tasking solution for iPhone/iPod Touch

Posted on November 5th, 2007 in iPhone, iPod Touch, third-party software | No Comments »

Surely someone out there has used the Remember The Milk application to help ease their OCD symptoms or better their tactfulness. Not me, I am too much of a slacker/procrastinator.

Remember The Milk Task List Manager

Regardless, the online to-do list has made it to the iPhone and the iPod Touch with a customized mobile Safari version of their site. You can use almost all of the same features as you have access to on your PC, but in order to do that you have to get a Pro account.

iPod Touch Bashing Continues

Posted on November 5th, 2007 in Apple, iPod Touch, third-party software | 7 Comments »

Yet another addition has been made to the library of iPod Touch bashing reviews. Only I respect this reviewer for being smart enough to review it from two different perspectives, one of how it performs as a run of the mill iPod and another for how it does as a mobile platform device.

ipod touch screen

As an iPod, he likes it, nay, he loves it, but that’s about as far as the love goes. As a mobile platform, he isn’t much of a fan thanks to all the crippling Apple did to both the OS and the Safari browser.

MacCaption adds subtitles to iPod Touch video

Posted on November 2nd, 2007 in iPod Touch, media, third-party software | No Comments »

While the iPod historically may have been the most popular audio player, Apple’s introduction of video capabilities - culminating in the iPod Touch with its super-accommodating widescreen display - has given the PMP a new role as entertainment device for those users hard of hearing or deaf.  Adding closed-caption subtitles to video content, however, can be a time-consuming task, and as such few pre-prepared clips are available.  MacCaption, by the Computer Prompting and Captioning Company, aims to change all that; it can add on-screen text to new and existing videos without needing to go through the lengthy re-compression processing traditionally adding subtitles would demand.

Now it is possible to stream music from your iPod Touch to your computer

Posted on November 2nd, 2007 in Apple, WiFi, iPhone, iPod Touch, third-party software | 9 Comments »

Yes it is true, now you can walk into your or your friend’s home or office and get a Mac computer to play the songs that your have on your Touch on his big computer speakers through iTunes.

Wireless Music Sharing

To do this, navigate to http://mike.home.tl/iphone using Safari on your iPod. This will install a new app source into the Installer.app. Or you can run Installer and add this url to the sources tab. This will make “Firefly” appear on the list of installable objects. Now install and run Firefly (give it about 5-10 minutes to build your database). The length of this will depend on the amount of songs in your library.

JailBreakMe.com one-click iPod Touch/iPhone 1.1.1 JailBreak

Posted on October 30th, 2007 in Apple, DIY, hack, iPhone, iPod Touch, jailbreak, third-party software | 2 Comments »

So let’s say you wanted to JailBreak your iPhone or iPod Touch over the past few weeks since the release of the first 1.1.1 JailBreak. It was a fairly lengthy process, and depending on when you got up the nerve to try it, required a decent chunk of time on the command line interface.

Well now its as easy as navigating, on a wifi connection, and in Safari, to jailbreakme.com and clicking “Install AppSnapp” at the bottom. That’s it, no PC required; it makes use of the TIFF exploit and then goes to work.

BBC may crib iPod Touch interface for iPlayer TV download software

Posted on October 30th, 2007 in Multi-Touch, iPod Touch, media, third-party software | No Comments »

With a screen so delicious as that of the iPod Touch, the hunger for new and glossy content to display on it can easily become a ravenous need.  Sadly the lack of even a Mac client for the BBC’s TV download service “iPlayer” means that you’ll have to wait until Christmas before you can even view Auntie’s shows on your MacBook (and even then it’ll be streaming, not true downloading).  However, don’t be surprised if some of the UI is familiar: it turns out that the head of the BBC’s Future Media and Technology unit, Ashley Highfield, is particularly taken with the iPod Touch, and hopes to bring some of its intuitive interface to future iterations of the corporation’s software:

“I am a deep lover of Macs. I have had one in the past. I got the iPod Touch in New York before they were here … I think the iPod Touch is a beautiful piece of design. If everything could have that intuitiveness of use… and certainly in terms of the BBC iPlayer, I aspire to it being that easy to use”Ashley Highfield, BBC
