In a little over ten days, you’ll be able to download the first public release of the SIP-VoIP software for the iPod Touch, giving access to any SIP-compliant internet telephony provider.  If you’re stuck for something to do until the New Year, there’s always the instructions for building your own microphone attachment; we’ve covered the parts list before, but now there’s a handy pictorial guide (part 1 & part 2) to building your own.

It also served to answer one of my questions - why not fit a microphone socket rather than an actual microphone?  Well, as modder Marian points out, the socket attachment is probably ten times the weight of the dock adaptor with built-in microphone, and that’s not something you want hanging from your precious iPod Touch!

Has anybody followed these instructions and built their own microphone?  Let us know in the comments, we’d love to see your efforts.  I’d also imagine there are third-party accessory manufacturers watching all this closely, and wouldn’t be surprised to see adaptors of a similar design on sale early in 2008.
