What Came Out of the iPhone SDK Announcement Today?
Posted on March 6th, 2008 in Apple, Apple Special Event, gaming, iPhone, iPod Touch |
Today at 10:00 am as promised Steve Jobs took the stage at Town Hall on the Apple Campus. He has announced some amazing new features as well as a BETA version of the SDK (downloadable from Apples website). More info, details and apps after the jump.

The new software iPhone and iPod Touch Version 2.0 will incorporate all new features stated at the announcement and new Enterprise Features. However, this update is a free update for iPhone owners but they will charge iPod Touch owners a small fee for accounting purposes. The Enterprise Features include…
- Push email
- Push calendar
- Push contacts
- Global address list
- Cisco IPsec VPN
- Certificates and Identities
- WPA2 / 802.1x
- Enforced security policies
- Device configuration
- Remote wipe
- Active Sync and Microsoft Exchange support
He also demoed the use of the SDK and gave it out to a few companies two weeks prior to the announcement today. He gave these companies two weeks (a surprising short amount of time) to develop an App for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Some of the demoed programs include…
- Epocrates - popular drug reference application for physicians.
- Salesforce.com
- AOL AIM (instant messaging client)
- SEGA’s Super Monkey Ball
All of these were created in only 2 weeks
How will these Apps be downloaded? Well, similar to the installer.app service offered for jailbroken iPod Touch and iPhone owners, there will be an App on the device itself that will let you download all the content you want. The price of these apps will vary but speculations are pointing towards most of the being free of charge.
More information will pour in during the following weeks, stay tuned to Apple-Touch.com for all the news.

Apple sucks! They charge the ipod touch owners but not the iphone owners. Thats what I call freakin stupid. They are getting rich off the ipod touch but want us to spend even more for the frickin updates. I think iphone owners should have to pay as well or ipod touch owners dont have to pay it should be free. Oh and twenty dollars is not a small fee it like 10% of the cost of the ipod itself.
They are required by law to charge for the upgrades for the Touch. Since the iPhone is a subscription product (you pay a monthly fee for your phone service and Apple gets a chunk of that) Apple continues to make money off you even after you buy your iPhone. The iPod Touch is totally different. You buy it and thats it, no more money for Apple, therefore, they have to charge you something when they add new features. I agree its unfortunate, and it doesn’t make much sense, but its the law, there is nothing Apple can do about it.
OK - two points.
1) $20 is not 10% of $299. $29 is. It’s closer to 7% (6.68% of a $299 ‘Touch to be exact). I’m not saying I’m happy about the idea that I have to pay money to get applications that are now shipping on other ‘Touches. Nor am I happy about having to pay to get 2.0. But at least stop folks from ignoring your opinion because you exaggerate your statement by almost double.
2) Required by law ? Which law requires a company to charge for updates ? And if that’s the case, where were all the other charges for the updates ? I think Apple is simply trying to recover development costs for the apps and the 2.0 software by taxing the ‘Touch owners. The only reason they probably won’t charge the iPhone owners is because of the agreement with AT&T. And breaking contract terms is against the law…
I’m happy to see that development continues on the platform. It’s great. I just hope that 2.0 will _include_ the applications. If not, I don’t see folks doing much unless required.
Could they do so by stopping 1.X software iPhones and Touches from syncing with iTunes ? Sure they could. Will they ? Probably not without dire warnings, like when lots of iPhones got bricked by the first update…
