Will the huge success of Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch line it makes you wonder what might be next for the “iPhones Little Brother”. Silicon Valley Insider thinks there is enough evidence of the iPod Touch to be updated with some new (Hardware Based) features. Some of these changes include…

“- More storage for the same price. The 16-gig unit should drop to $299; the 32-gig unit to $399. (An 8-gig iPhone will cost $199 after carrier subsidy; a 16-gig iPhone will cost $299.)
- A camera. The iPhone’s camera is a novelty, but it’s a useful one, and we’d like to see it on the touch, too. Video recording also makes sense, especially with a 32-gig drive.
- Mic and speakers. People are going to use this as a wi-fi Internet phone. So it’d be helpful if Apple included a microphone. Speakers would be nice so a small group could listen to tunes or calls.
- A bigger version. Increasing the screen size to five or seven inches would make movie-watching and Web-browsing much better. Load it up with enough features and capabilities, and you’re looking at a mini-tablet computer, and we think there’s a substantial market for that.”
These updates would make sense and would make people feel better about spending more on the iPod Touch than the iPhone 3G.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. I would upgrade my Touch in a heartbeat if the next gen Touch only carried a camera, speakers and mic. Video-recording and a larger screen would only be an added bonus. This move would definitely stop the cannibalization factor that’s already looming.
I totally agree. In addition to completely reasonable and inexpensive features mentioned above, I think they will also probably add the GPS reciever, tactile feedback, lo jack, a fingerprint scanner, and the ability to project video out of the headphone jack. Theres no way adding these features would cut into Apples profits, and I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before they do it.
Also,
Making sense would be a Bluetooth. Every Mac has it now. I agree they need to move them down a notch in price, but suspect Apple is less likely to do that than add some hardware for the current price point.
There are some cameras out there with Music and Video playback. The only question is “Who will be the first to add a good camera to their media player?” The big screen of the Touch demands it. I’m not confident Apple will want to draw potential iPhone buyers away with similar harware on the Touch.
Uummm…No. If anyone wanted all those features, they would buy an iPhone. Apple’s not going to add everything that an iPhone has or they might as well not even have iPod Touch.
Uummmmm….Yes. I’m from Canada, and what is keeping me from purchasing the iphone is the rediculous pricing plan available through Rogers and Fido (no unlimited data…geez!). So my best option is to pick up an ipod touch, I’m waiting for the next version though, hopefully with all the bells and whistles you mentioned, plus more memory…I hope.
If I by the new $199 Iphone… and I turn it into a ‘touch’?
(The last thing I need is *ANOTHER* cell phone.)
I sold my iPod Touch for $300. If Silicon Valley Insider just joking… guest who will I see in the court!
Mic & Speakers would be a wonderful plus.Never considered the UMA option but I would love to be able to just play music and/or video without headphones.
holy c**p!!!! ITS AN iPOD!!!!! What the hell?!! People are expecting too much of an IPOD!!!!! Just get a freaking iPhone if you want those features!!!!
